World Patient Safety Day 2019

17 September 2019

Today (17th September 2019) marks World Patient Safety Day, endorsed by the World Health Assembly (WHO), with the objective of raising global awareness about patient safety and encouraging global solidarity and action.

To mark the day, the WHO has released 10 facts on patient safety including:

  • Estimates show that in high-income countries, as many as one in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care caused by a range of adverse events, with nearly 50% of them considered preventable
  • The occurrence of adverse events due to unsafe care is likely one of the 10 leading causes of death and disability across the world
  • As many as four out of every 10 patients are harmed in primary and outpatient health care, with up to 80% of the harm considered to have been preventable.
  • Investment in patient safety can lead to significant financial savings

Radar Healthcare was borne out of a passion to improve the delivery of care, and patient safety is at the heart of everything we do.  We’re all too aware of the workforce crisis that the health and social care sector is facing, particularly within the NHS and this, along with other contributing factors is having a significant impact on patient safety.  So, our software has been designed to support the operational functions of health and care organisations, freeing up more time to focus on patients;  and our behaviour-change focused methodology underpins health and care quality management frameworks at every level, promoting a culture of continuous improvement within organisations.

In line with our focus on preventing avoidable harm, we recently wrote about our partnership with leading healthcare consultancy EY and how we are working together to deliver a digital approach to clinical harm reviews with the objective of minimising clinical harm through patient risk stratification, better use of clinical resource and electronic auditing and reporting.
