Milton Keynes Trust first to roll out new national risk management system with Radar Healthcare

Milton Keynes University Hospital Partnership Announcement with Radar HealthcareMilton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (MKUH) has become the first to integrate the new NHS Learn from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE) service having partnered with software specialists Radar Healthcare.

The LFPSE service will create a single national NHS system to not only improve how patient safety events are recorded across all healthcare providers, but also use the insights combined with technology such as machine learning to help predict and reduce future incidents.

The new system, which Radar Healthcare was the first compliant supplier of, will be used by 4,500 staff at the Milton Keynes Trust to help safeguard not only the 400,000 patients under its care each year, but also patients across England.

Radar Healthcare worked in collaboration with NHS England to develop the platform, which can be accessed securely via mobile devices, will also allow healthcare staff to comply with policy, business and training requirements; manage documents and action and improvement plans, and carry out audits.

LFPSE will replace the current National Report and Learning System (NRLS) and Strategic Executive Information System (StEIS).

According to the NHS around three quarters of reporting to the NRLS and StEIS are from the hospital sector. LFPSE aims to make recording safety events easier in other care settings, including primary care and care homes.

Kate Jarman, Director of Corporate Affairs at MKUH said: “Usability was a key driver for us in selecting Radar Healthcare. We wanted a cloud-based system that all of our staff, from ward to desk-based colleagues, would engage with and find easy to use.

“The fact that we could work with Radar Healthcare to be the first Trust in the country to report on the national LFPSE system was a real bonus. Not only are we improving the safety of our own patients, but we are also helping to improve patient safety across the country.

MKUH has a strong track record of partnering with companies that offer innovative solutions to improve patient care. Over the last two years they have cemented their place as one of the most digitally advanced hospitals in the UK, introducing solutions which include joining forces with Apple to enable patients to view their medical records from their iPhone and becoming the first in Europe to use a cutting-edge surgical robot to carry out gynaecological surgeries.

Mark Fewster, Head of Product, affirmed: “We are grateful for this opportunity to be a part of NHS Improvement’s LFPSE project, helping drive progress in national patient safety through insight gained from the data from Milton Keynes University Hospital provide, among others.”

“Once available, we look forward to using the data in Radar Healthcare to unlock existing potential, providing learning and improvement outcomes within that national healthcare data set.”

Paul Johnson, CEO of Radar Healthcare adds: “This is an exciting project to be involved in. The use of LFPSE aims to not only transform how patient incidents are recorded, but to apply that valuable insight across the whole NHS healthcare estate to improve patient safety and care and the environments NHS staff work within. To be a part of that is something we’re incredibly proud of.

“We’re very pleased that the first trust to introduce LFPSE with Radar Healthcare is such an innovative and forward-thinking organisation as MKUH. In the future, we look forward to rolling the system out to other healthcare providers, and develop additional functionality to improve safety for staff as well as patients.
